why a brand,
for one shirt.

A single garment, made carefully, in cotton or silk, for men and women, in five sizes. The whole brand begins with the field — and the patient years it takes for a thread to earn its place at the loom.

The white shirt is the most photographed garment in the world, and the least considered one. It hangs in every wardrobe in some forgotten state — yellowed at the collar, frayed at the cuff, bought in a hurry, replaced in another. We started The Great White Shirt because that seemed unreasonable.

Our brief was small and stubborn: design exactly two shirts, in cotton and silk, drafted for men and women, available in five sizes — XS, S, M, L, XL — and finish them so well that they would replace four lesser garments at a stroke. No new colors. No seasonal drops. No collection of twenty-six things you don't need.

The cotton came from a mill in Porto, run by a third-generation weaver who served us coffee for three days while we tested swatches against window light. The silk came from a smaller mill in Como, where a man named Luca taught us the difference between 16 momme and 19 momme by handing us a glass of water and asking us to drop a thread of each on the surface. The 19 momme stays. The 16 momme drowns.

Cuts came next. Two patterns, drafted from the body up — one for men, one for women — refined across a hundred toiles. Sizing followed: five clean grades from XS to XL, fitted by measurement rather than approximation. There is no XXS, no XXL, no in-between half size. We would rather be honest about who the shirt fits than pretend it fits everyone.

What you see on this site is the entire range. Buy one. Wear it for a year. Then write to us and tell us how it held up. That, more than any campaign, is the brand.
